Boakai ousts mining chiefs in power shakeup

Liberian President Joseph Boakai has replaced his mining minister and chief regulator as the iron ore-exporting nation pursues American investment in critical minerals. Matenokay Tingban takes over from Wilmot Paye to enhance governance and efficiency in the ministry, according to a statement issued on Monday by the presidential office.

The government appointed a new director for the state mining authority on Tuesday. Liberia recently discovered lithium, cobalt, manganese, and rare earth deposits essential for electric vehicles and renewable energy production.

American Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Liberian Foreign Minister Sara Nyanti on October 17 in Washington to explore expanded United States mining participation. ArcelorMittal operates the nation's largest mine and rail system, though gold exports have grown in importance for foreign currency earnings under Boakai's five-year development blueprint.
