Boniface Mwangi arrested over terrorism and arson claims after filing EACJ petition

Police detained human rights campaigner Boniface Mwangi at his Machakos residence on Saturday. Officers confiscated his electronic equipment during the operation. Authorities connected him to suspected terrorism and arson activities. His spouse Njeri Mwangi verified the detention to media outlets. Activist Hussein Khalid mobilized legal representatives to address the situation.

The arrest followed Mwangi's court filing against multiple East African governments. He submitted the legal challenge alongside Ugandan attorney Agather Atuhaire on July 18. Their petition targets Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya and the East African Community leadership. The pair seeks justice for alleged human rights abuses they experienced. Both activists claim they suffered torture and forced deportation after visiting Tanzania in May to monitor opposition leader Tundu Lissu's treason proceedings.
