A Zanu PF candidate for Gutu East created a water crisis after tearing down community boreholes. Zvarevashe Masvingise promised to replace them with solar boreholes within three days. Four weeks have passed and the solar project never started. Villagers must walk several kilometers to rivers and streams for water. Women and girls suffer the most from this situation.
Charles Mudhakwa Nqadini, a Zanu PF youth member, dismantled boreholes across the area. Two churches at Mandeya Business Center faced water shortages during weekend conferences. The Reformed Church and AFM churches could not access water because Nqadini had broken their borehole. Workers from Rural Infrastructure Development Agency found the borehole badly damaged when they came to fix it. Nqadini refused to comment about his actions.
Independent candidate Gift Gonese said villagers are upset about the destroyed boreholes. People are trying to restore the manual boreholes but repairs cost a lot of money. Masvingise would not talk about the problem and accused Masvingo Mirror of bias against his party. Zanu PF used similar tactics during 2022 elections when they promised solar boreholes but abandoned the projects after losing. National Constitutional Assembly spokesperson Maddock Chivasa said Zanu PF fails to keep promises before elections even happen.
