BRELA goes digital, business registrations hit record highs

Tanzania's business registration agency just flexed some solid numbers after going mostly digital over the past five years. BRELA boss Godfrey Nyaisa told Industry Minister Judith Kapinga that over 90 percent of their stuff runs online after linking up with tax and ID databases. The agency processed more than 73,000 company registrations, 133,000 business names, plus thousands of trademarks and licenses between mid-2020 and mid-2025.

Kapinga pushed BRELA to keep cranking up speed and accountability since they handle the country's main business gateway. She wants all ministry systems talking to each other so traders and investors get consistent data instead of conflicting info. Officials said faster registration helps job creation and widens the tax base, and the government keeps dumping money into tech to make Tanzania look attractive for regional investment.
