Burkina Faso Junta Busts Ivory Coast Coup Plot

Military leaders in Burkina Faso stopped what they call a major plot against Captain Ibrahim Traoré last week. Security Minister Mahamadou Sana claims both active and former soldiers worked with terrorist leaders to attack the presidential palace. They wanted to create chaos and put the country under international control. Officials say they discovered this information only recently. The government has made similar claims about earlier attempts to remove Traoré since he took power in 2022.

The country faces ongoing battles with armed groups that control about 40 percent of its territory. Captain Traoré promised better security and formed partnerships with Russia, but attacks continue across the nation. Security officials say plotters tried to use religious and traditional leaders to convince army officers to join them. The plan allegedly involved soldiers recruited by enemies outside the country. Government officials blame people based in the neighboring Ivory Coast for organizing the attempt.

Several military personnel were arrested last week for planning to destabilize the government. Ivory Coast has not responded to accusations it harbored plotters. Burkina Faso recently left the West African regional group Ecowas with Mali and Niger to create their alliance. These countries ended relationships with France and became Russian allies instead.
