Burkina Faso just foiled a plot to topple Traore

Burkina Faso military leaders caught people plotting against Capt Ibrahim Traoré last week. Security Minister Mahamadou Sana said former soldiers worked with terrorists to plan attacks on the presidential palace. They wanted to create chaos across the country. The plotters hoped international groups would take control afterward. Officials have claimed several similar coup attempts since Traoré took power in 2022.

The nation struggles with armed groups controlling about 40% of its territory. Despite promises from the military government, security problems continue, with many attacks happening regularly. Sana explained that plotters tried using religious leaders to convince army officers to join them. The attack was planned for April 16, 2025, but failed. Military leaders claim all masterminds hide in the neighboring Ivory Coast.

Some soldiers were arrested last week for planning to overthrow the government. Ivory Coast hasn't responded to accusations about hosting coup plotters. Burkina Faso also claimed it stopped another plot last November. The country has joined Mali and Niger in leaving the West African regional group Ecowas. These three nations cut ties with France and made new partnerships with Russia instead.
