Burundi nationals caught in Chirundu hitching a ride to Harare

Detectives arrested three Burundi citizens at a Chirundu service station after receiving information about their presence. Manasse Nshimirimana, Arcade Nihorimbere, and Eddy Yaremye Huvugi sought transportation to Harare without proper documentation. Officers detained the men on June 23 when they failed to present valid permits during questioning. The National Prosecuting Authority sentenced each defendant to four months' imprisonment, with the sentence suspended for five years. Their freedom depends on maintaining good behavior during the probationary period.

Zimbabwe serves as a significant transit point for migrants from East and West Africa traveling to South Africa. Security forces have increased operations along smuggling corridors between Chirundu and Beitbridge border posts. The recent arrests represent part of broader enforcement efforts targeting unauthorized border crossings. Migration patterns continue to challenge regional authorities as people seek economic opportunities. Enhanced patrols aim to reduce the illegal movement of individuals through established trafficking networks.
