Burundi Upset Uganda With Wonder Goal

Burundi stunned defending champions Uganda with a 1-0 victory at the 2025 CECAFA Senior Women Championship opener Friday. The match took place at Azam Complex in Chamazi, Tanzania. Esperance Habonimana scored the winner during the 75th minute with a brilliant free kick. Her curling shot caught Uganda goalkeeper Daisy Nakaziro out of position. The goal shocked the favored Ugandan team.

Uganda controlled most of the first half with better ball possession. The team created several scoring chances but could not find the net. Winger Margret Kunihira missed the best opportunity for Uganda during the second half. Her shot went wide of the goal post. Coach Sheryl Botes showed clear frustration from the sidelines.

Burundi gained confidence as the game continued and defended well against Uganda's attacks. Substitute Sylvia Kabene nearly equalized for Uganda late in the match. Burundian goalkeeper Faida Habimana made a crucial save to preserve the clean sheet. Officials named Habonimana as Player of the Match for her outstanding performance. Uganda faces South Sudan on Sunday June 15 at the same venue.
