Bus Operators Booted for Mega Rail City Project

The people who run the buses and matatus at the railways' bus terminal in Nairobi will have to move out before the end of the year. This is because a big project called the Nairobi Railway City is going to be built there. The project will cost Sh30 billion and will be paid for by the United Kingdom.

Philip Mainga, who is in charge of Kenya Railways, said that they have already made a deal with the National Transport and Safety Authority. The deal says that the bus and matatu operators will move to a new place called the Green Park terminal when the Railway City project starts.

The Railway City project will take up 425 acres of land in the middle of Nairobi. It will make it easier for people to get around the city. There will be a bigger Central Station, new bus lanes and stations, and better places for matatus to stop. This will help people get in and out of the city center more easily.

The Railway City will be similar to other famous railway cities in the world, like Kings Cross Station in London. It will be a place where people can travel, do business, and have fun.

President William Ruto officially started the project on December 7, 2022. Mr. Mainga said that they have finished all the studies and plans for the project. They will start building it in the next year, between 2025 and 2026.

Some other parts of the project are almost done, too. There is a new bridge and some workshops in Makadara. These will help improve the city's railways.

Even though there are plans to build a new railway called the SGR, Mr. Mainga said that the older railway, the metre-gauge railway, is still very important. It carries both people and goods. Every day, between 20,000 and 30,000 people use the trains in Nairobi to get around.
