California bans masked ICE cops, Newsom defies Trump

California Governor Gavin Newsom signed legislation prohibiting law enforcement officers from wearing face masks during official duties. The measure takes effect January 1, 2026, and applies to local and federal agents. Newsom described the action as protection against what he terms secret police operations. Federal officials stated they will maintain current practices despite the state mandate. US Attorney Bill Essayli argued California lacks authority over federal operations.

The legislation emerged after federal immigration raids in Los Angeles prompted violent demonstrations. Trump administration officials deployed 700 Marines and 4,000 National Guard troops to address the unrest. State Senator Scott Wiener authored the bill following community concerns about masked officers. The law permits exceptions for undercover work, disease protection, and tactical equipment. Additional measures require officer identification and restrict federal access to schools and hospitals without proper warrants.
