California considers adding ancient Touch ID to 2026 Apple Watch

Recent code discoveries suggest Apple may integrate Touch ID technology into future Apple Watch models. The leaked programming references 2026 releases and contains the internal designation "AppleMesa" that Apple uses for fingerprint authentication systems. Previous patent applications have addressed biometric security for wearable devices without resulting in commercial products. Size constraints have historically prevented the company from implementing this authentication method on smartwatches. Macworld spotted the specific code entries that indicate potential biometric authentication development.

Apple currently places Touch ID sensors within home buttons on iPhone 5s models and power buttons on recent iPad Air devices. The company could apply similar positioning strategies for Apple Watch integration. Android manufacturers have adopted in-display optical fingerprint readers for smartphones while Apple has not pursued this approach. Face ID remains the preferred biometric solution for premium Apple products. Code references do not guarantee final product implementation as development challenges may lead to feature cancellation.
