Caribbean Airlines CEO flees after Persad-Bissessar threat

Garvin Medera resigned as chief executive officer of Caribbean Airlines after eight years, and he became the longest-serving CEO in company history. Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar had warned airline management to resolve operational problems within two years or face removal. Finance Minister Davendranath Tancoo said he received no formal notification about Medera's departure, and the executive is reportedly exploring private sector opportunities.

The airline faced criticism from Persad-Bissessar, who described Caribbean Airlines as corrupt, and she cited unprofitable routes and years of missing audits despite an 86-person finance department. The carrier reported a $12.1 million operating profit in 2024 after recording $48 million in losses during 2021. Leadership changes continued as executive manager of finance, Kern Gardiner, was dismissed, and chief financial officer Varuna Kuarsingh was placed on leave until Oct. 10.
