Catholic Church seeks Shs 600 million for needy children

Caritas Uganda needs 600 million shillings to help 380 poor children after international donations decreased. Bishop Serverus Jjumba of Masaka Diocese announced the target at the launch of a fundraising campaign ahead of a charity dinner scheduled for Friday, November 28, at Hotel Africana. The Catholic organization wants 10,000 Ugandans to give 60,000 shillings each to fund education and welfare programs for orphans and vulnerable children.

The group operates through 19 diocesan offices that provide emergency relief and support families regardless of religious background. Last year, donors helped Caritas assist 372 people affected by the Kiteezi landfill disaster and 895 flood victims in Kasese. The organization also delivered Christmas supplies to Nsambya Babies Home and paid school fees for 11 children from Kotido Diocese.

Father Hilary Muheezangango said investing in children's education offers the best path out of poverty. Partner schools already provide scholarships to needy students through church programs that identify qualifying families.
