CBI probes Sonam Wangchuk for FCRA breach as Leh violence flares, BJP blames Congress

The Central Bureau of Investigation launched preliminary inquiries against climate activist Sonam Wangchuk for alleged Foreign Contribution Regulation Act breaches. Officials confirmed that investigators visited Leh ten days earlier following Ministry of Home Affairs complaints regarding his Himalayan Institute of Alternatives Ladakh. The agency accused Wangchuk of receiving overseas funding without proper authorization through three separate revenue transactions. No formal charges have been filed during this preliminary phase.

Violent demonstrations erupted across Leh on Wednesday, prompting authorities to impose emergency restrictions on public gatherings. Security personnel deployed tear gas and opened fire after protesters torched government vehicles and attacked multiple offices. The Ministry of Home Affairs directly blamed Wangchuk for encouraging youth participation in destructive activities. Political leaders from opposing parties exchanged accusations regarding responsibility for orchestrating the civil unrest.
