Chakwera Banks on 3M Jobs for New Grads

President Lazarus Chakwera aims to create three million jobs from September until August 2030. He shared this plan during the University of Malawi graduation, where students completed their 109th ceremony at Zomba's Great Hall. The president expects these graduates will help build a more productive nation through agriculture, tourism, and mining. He promised to distribute K500 billion in loans for job creators during the next five years. Recent graduates should join patriotic citizens in building toward middle-income status.

Chakwera said he has spent time since 2020 fixing broken systems. He removed the quota system, split universities into separate institutions, and established a higher education ministry. The president increased student loan funding and appointed Jessie Kabwira as minister. He ordered officials to shut down fake schools that produce unqualified graduates. The foundation work is nearing completion, and the focus is shifting toward advancing higher education.

University leader Samson Sajidu asked graduates to remain humble and honest. He reminded them that their education never taught corruption or bad behavior. Of the 2,643 graduates from public universities, 1,260 were women, and 1,383 were men. Twenty-six students earned distinction honors for their academic performance.
