Chakwera calls on MCP to rebuild unity, restore trust

Former Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera has urged Malawi Congress Party members to restore internal cohesion and regain voter confidence following their electoral defeat, acknowledging that citizens rejected the party for failing to deliver on promises. Speaking at a Lilongwe briefing, the MCP leader characterized the September loss as an opportunity to conduct internal reflection and understand why voters chose differently, while warning against factional infighting that could further damage party prospects.

Chakwera told supporters the electoral setback should motivate members to listen to constituents, demonstrate humility, and rebuild credibility both within party ranks and among the broader electorate. He pledged to personally spearhead efforts aimed at positioning MCP for future governance, emphasizing that restoring trust requires members to support rather than attack one another.

The appearance marked Chakwera's first public statement since losing to President Peter Mutharika, with the outgoing leader committing to continue working toward electoral recovery throughout his tenure as party president.
