Municipal councilor Boris Bonev from Save Sofia warns about ongoing corruption problems in the city government. Bonev told Bulgarian National Radio that uncontrolled practices continue despite leadership changes. He fears GERB could return to power if citizens fail to address these issues. The councilor also expressed concern that Peevski might become prime minister. Sofia serves as a testing ground for national politics across Bulgaria.
Corruption affects more than just traditional parties like GERB and DPS according to Bonev. The current Sofia Municipality still operates under corrupt systems from previous administrations. Many officials who worked during the GERB era remain in their positions today. The councilor stressed that communities must create accountability rather than ignore scandals. Leaders should take personal responsibility instead of avoiding blame.
Mayor Vasil Terziev participated in choosing all district mayors and deputy mayors through nomination committees. Bonev explained that Terziev conducted background checks on candidates before appointments. The mayor cannot claim ignorance about problems since Nikola Barbutov reports directly to him. Terziev must explain what measures he will implement to prevent future corruption. One third of deputy mayor positions remain empty showing poor personnel management.
Bonev contacted district mayors from Save Sofia after recent scandals broke. He asked about pressure or discussions regarding contracts and percentages. The responses came back negative and he reminded them about prevention rules. Kiril Petkov made the right choice by resigning even though he was not personally involved in wrongdoing.
