ChatGPT now joins group chats, up to 20 people

OpenAI has globally launched a group chat function for its ChatGPT platform, enabling up to twenty individuals to collaborate within a single conversation. This update transforms the artificial intelligence from a solitary tool into a collaborative partner for tasks like group travel planning or co-writing projects. The company stated it anticipates the AI will increasingly assist people in planning and creating together.

To initiate a group, users add participants via a link or direct invite, with each person creating a brief profile. The AI is designed to follow the discussion's flow and interject when appropriate, though users can also prompt it directly. When new members join an existing chat, a fresh conversation thread begins to preserve the original. Individual user memories and settings remain private and do not transfer into the shared group environment.
