Chitangi's $1.5b BBPC pipe links Harare, Lusaka

Zimbabwe will serve as a central hub for a 1.5 billion dollar petroleum infrastructure project connecting Mozambique's Beira Port through Harare to Zambia, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Malawi. The Beira Bulk Petroleum Company has secured financing for the cross-border pipeline system and expects to begin construction within six months following completion of technical assessments and environmental reviews.

Chief executive Darlington Chitangi said Zimbabwean companies will participate through equity stakes, engineering contracts and operational roles, with discussions planned between his organization and the Mutapa Investment Fund regarding sovereign involvement. The initial segment will span 50 kilometers from the Mabvuku terminal to Lusaka through Lion's Den, with completion targeted within twelve months of groundbreaking.

The infrastructure includes two major Zambian facilities: a 150,000 cubic meter Katoba Bulk Plant with an attached cassava ethanol processing operation and the government-operated Lusaka West Bulk Terminal holding 102,000 cubic meters. Board member Cyrus Kaocha noted the system will support Zambian copper production expansion and regional mining operations while reducing fuel transportation expenses across participating nations.
