Chiwenga Reaffirms Loyalty to Mnangagwa

Vice President Constantino Chiwenga pledged loyalty to Zimbabwe's President Emmerson Mnangagwa amid rising pressure from war veterans urging Mnangagwa to resign and hand power to his deputy.

The declaration emerges as ZANU PF confronts internal rifts and intensifying demands from high-ranking members. These veterans claim Mnangagwa failed to meet commitments made during his leadership term, pushing for new leadership before the next party gathering.

ZANU PF Information Secretary Christopher Mutsvangwa issued a firm rebuke on February 5 against Central Committee member Runesu Geza. Mutsvangwa labeled Geza's statements "outlandish, treasonable, and egregious," citing violations of party rules and leadership authority.

The party emphasized its disciplinary bodies have begun addressing these challenges, reinforcing unity and dedication to revolutionary values. Leadership restated support for Mnangagwa and plans to implement decisions from the October 2024 Bulawayo Conference under Zimbabwe's 2013 Constitution.

Chiwenga addressed speculation about presidential ambitions directly, stating, "President Mnangagwa is the boss, and as his Vice President, I remain loyal to his leadership. Our focus as a party is on unity and delivering on the promises we made to the people."

This public declaration might reduce tensions inside ZANU PF and strengthen Mnangagwa's authority. Political analysts suggest these internal disputes could create weaknesses ahead of the 2028 general elections.

War veterans, long considered crucial ZANU PF supporters, have voiced disappointment with the current party direction. Their calls for leadership changes and accusations of broken promises reveal the growing distance between party leaders and core supporters.

ZANU PF maintains its Vision 2030 commitment to transform Zimbabwe into an upper-middle-income economy. Leadership urged members to maintain discipline and unity, cautioning against actions threatening party stability.

This display of unity faces scrutiny as ZANU PF manages internal discord. The party aims to preserve its dominant position in Zimbabwe's political landscape through these challenging times.
