Chiwenga takes on Mnangagwa in Harare ZANU PF throne battle

Zimbabwe's ruling ZANU-PF party faces internal upheaval as Vice President Constantino Chiwenga directly challenges President Emmerson Mnangagwa's authority. The former military commander blocked businessman Kudakwashe Tagwirei from attending a Central Committee meeting last week. Chiwenga ordered security personnel to remove Tagwirei from party headquarters despite the businessman's close ties to Mnangagwa. The confrontation highlights deep divisions within the ruling elite ahead of the 2028 elections. Party insiders describe growing tensions between military traditionalists and business interests.

Mnangagwa's influence continues declining after his failed attempt to extend his presidency beyond constitutional limits. Several provincial structures have shifted their loyalty toward Chiwenga, who enjoys strong military support. Sources report a hostile atmosphere at the State House with Mnangagwa excluded from key decisions. The president's recent international travels appear designed to project strength while losing domestic control. Economic troubles and currency instability further weaken his position within the party leadership structure.
