CIDB probes ECRL canopy collapse

A comprehensive investigation has been initiated into the collapse of a temporary steel structure at an East Coast Rail Link construction site. The Construction Industry Development Board is leading the inquiry to determine if any regulatory breaches occurred. Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi confirmed that the board has ordered the project developer, Malaysia Rail Link Sdn Bhd, to suspend all construction work in the affected area immediately.

The minister emphasized the necessity of a thorough investigation, noting the incident happened on a public road and caused significant public concern. The order to halt work will remain in effect until the cause is identified and safety measures are fully assured. In a related incident, a woman required rescue from her vehicle after it was crushed by falling debris from the project.

In a separate development, the minister oversaw the distribution of Bailey Bridge components to nine Public Works Departments. This equipment is intended to facilitate a rapid response for reconnecting roads severed by disasters, such as during the upcoming monsoon season.
