City Oilers defeated Namuwongo Blazers 76-70 in the opening game of the National Basketball League Finals on Friday night at Lugogo Indoor Arena. Chad Bowie scored 29 points to lead the defending champions to victory in the best-of-seven series opener.
Namuwongo Blazers jumped out to a 7-0 lead before the Oilers recovered and took an 18-13 lead after the first quarter. The Blazers committed multiple turnovers, allowing the Oilers to build a 37-31 halftime lead. Namuwongo narrowed the gap to three points entering the final quarter at 53-50.
Arthur Wanyoto tied the contest at 56-56 with eight minutes remaining, but Bowie and Mer Maker restored the lead for the Oilers. Kurt Wegscheider contributed 16 points and Joseph Chuma added 12 for City Oilers. Joel Lukoji led Namuwongo with 22 points.
The teams meet again on Sunday at the same venue for Game Two.
