Clair Obscur stripped of GOTY over sneaky AI use

The indie hit Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 just had its Game of the Year award revoked by the Indie Game Awards committee. The organization stripped the title, along with a win for Debut Game, after confirming developer Sandfall Interactive used generative AI in the game's creation. This violates the awards' strict rules against any GenAI use. The trophies were handed to the runners-up, Sorry We're Closed and Blue Prince.

Sandfall had previously told awards representatives that no GenAI was used during the submission process. That claim fell apart when a past interview with a Spanish outlet resurfaced, containing an admission from the studio. When directly questioned during the awards show, Sandfall finally confirmed the AI use. It is unclear if the initial denial was a deliberate lie or a miscommunication from an uninformed staff member. The studio has been notably quiet about its AI implementation, likely fearing the significant backlash that has hit other developers who admit to using the tech.

This situation highlights the ongoing and fierce controversy around AI in game development. Many players and creators remain strongly opposed. Yet industry trends suggest more studios are experimenting with these tools internally. The Indie Game Awards have drawn a clear line, potentially excluding many future projects. For now, some developers seem willing to use the technology but remain afraid of the public finding out.
