Climate action needed to protect vulnerable lives

UN Climate Chief Says World Far From Meeting Temperature Goals.

The world stands at a turning point as Brazil prepares to host COP 30. The dream of keeping the earth's warming to 1.5°C seems distant, with temperatures already up by 3°C.

UN climate leader Simon Stiell shared this hard news. He said the world needs faster action, though some steps forward have happened.

"We see warming headed toward 3 degrees, which brings great danger," Stiell said. He pointed to harsh weather and dying plants and animals as proof of the threat.

The years since the Paris Agreement have shown both good and bad signs. Many countries disagree more than before, yet the UN keeps bringing them together.

"The world has grown apart in many ways, but our work has stayed strong," Stiell said.

Without the UN's help, Earth might have experienced 5°C of warming. Scientists say this much heat would have ended human life.

Change comes slowly, but money flows faster toward clean power. In 2024, people put $2 trillion into clean power buildings, twice the money spent on oil and coal.

Business leaders see clean power as a smart choice that will bring good returns.

Yet not all countries share in these gains. Big nations move ahead with clean power plans, but small countries find it hard to pay for the changes they need.

The UN asks each country to make strong promises about cutting heat-trapping gases. Nations like Brazil and the UK lead by example with firm plans.

India shows how clean power can help people find work. If India invested more in clean power—just 2% more each year—it could create 13 million jobs annually.

Stiell talked about helping people deal with climate problems. He said half of all people live where bad weather hits hard.

"Each dollar we spend on protection saves six dollars in damage," he said.

The next big climate meeting will focus on the Amazon forest and its people. Brazil wants to help poor countries pay for climate work.

Stiell ended with hope for faster change: "We made the first steps. Let's help everyone move forward together."
