A mob of approximately 40 people attacked Narsingdi Sadar Circle additional superintendent of Police Anwar Hossain on Saturday after he arrested two extortionists at Arshinagar intersection in Narsingdi municipality. Hossain and his team detained the suspects at 10:30 a.m. after catching them collecting money from drivers of compressed natural gas rickshaws and battery-powered auto-rickshaws. The group demanded the release of the detainees, and attackers punched and kicked Hossain before freeing the arrested men and fleeing the scene.
Medical staff at Narsingdi Sadar Hospital treated Hossain before transferring him to Rajarbagh Police Hospital in Dhaka for advanced care. Dr. Farida Gulshan Kabir said the assault caused blood clots in his neck and legs. Hossain had traveled to the Puranpara area earlier that morning to recover a woman's body before encountering the extortionists on his return trip.
