CoPG challenges govt on poor security conditions

A group called the Coalition of Progressive Gambians wants better security across the country. They worry about recent armed holdups, strange killings, plus attacks where people were taken against their will. These events make regular citizens feel scared when they walk outside their homes. The team asked hard questions about plans to fix these problems and make streets safer for everyone. They believe the government must spend more money right away to help police and soldiers do their jobs better.

The group claims money meant for safety often goes to pay for trips and cars that have nothing to do with protecting people. They point fingers at the Finance Minister for moving cash away from important safety needs just to please certain powerful folks. Crime rates keep climbing because officers lack basic tools like cars and proper gear to catch criminals. Fire trucks break down or run out of water before flames can be put out in marketplaces and homes around the country. These problems need fixing fast before more people lose their businesses or lives.

According to this watchdog group, police and other safety workers rank among the worst-performing government teams. They lack proper training and equipment to handle emergencies that pop up daily across Gambia. The fire department struggles against blazes that destroy shops and houses because it has old hoses and trucks that barely work. Many officers never learned the basic rules of their jobs because training programs were cut short or skipped completely. Even with limited resources, proper planning could make things much better.

The group mentioned recent cases where a policewoman and soldier broke the rules because nobody taught them what they should or should not do at work. These officers faced punishment for actions they never knew were wrong in the first place. Though the officers deserve some blame, their bosses failed by not teaching them properly from day one. Every country has crime problems, but a small nation like Gambia should control these issues more easily with smart planning and better leadership from those in charge.

Young people need activities that keep them busy and teach them job skills instead of turning to crime. The government could start programs where teens learn business skills and find better paths forward than stealing or hurting others. Community members want to help make neighborhoods safer but need support from officials to make real changes happen. Prevention works better than punishment after crime shave already hurt innocent people. The Coalition believes that lower crime rates remain possible if leaders simply care enough to make smart changes today rather than waiting for tomorrow.
