Police and the Uganda National Bureau of Standards teamed up to smash a major fake cement operation in Luwero town. They caught Ronald Onyango red-handed mixing stone dust with real cement and stuffing it into fraudulent bags marked with popular cement brands.
Authorities raided a property owned by Daudah Mutesasira after receiving a tip about illegal cement production. Officers discovered Onyango using machines to create counterfeit cement bags. He was not only mixing stone dust with genuine cement but also cheating on bag weights and slapping fake quality control stickers on the packages.
Law enforcement seized an enormous haul during the operation. More than 500 ready-to-sell fake cement bags landed in police custody. They also grabbed over 1,000 bags of stone dust waiting to become counterfeit products and more than 1 million fake quality seals.
Both Onyango and Mutesasira are locked up at Luwero Central police station. They will face serious charges at the Standards Utilities and Wildlife Court, including counterfeiting product seals and breaking weight regulations.
The seized fake cement will be destroyed in Nakasongola after court proceedings are over. Tororo Cement's marketing officer warned consumers about the extreme dangers of using fake building materials. Adulterated cement can cause structural failures and potentially deadly building collapses.
This bust follows another massive counterfeit cement operation uncovered just days earlier. Investigators found that criminal networks were diluting real cement with massive amounts of fine dust. Their fake products were spreading across Northern and Central Uganda and even crossing borders into the Democratic Republic of Congo.
