Corrupt Harare execs block ERP and steal 250M from taxpayers

The Mayor of Harare, Jacob Mafume, says the city lost a lot of money because bad people didn't want to use special computer systems. He thinks more than 250 million American dollars disappeared because people misused the money.

Mr. Mafume discussed these problems at a special meeting. He explained that the city hasn't checked its money since 2019. This happened because some leaders stopped the city from using computers to keep track of money. He believes they did this on purpose to hide that they were taking money.

The Mayor said some city workers and council members made a plan to steal money. They didn't want to use the new computer system because it would show everyone what they were doing wrong. These people kept making excuses not to use the system. They wanted to keep taking money without anyone finding out.

Mr. Mpofu, a lawyer at the meeting, asked the Mayor why he didn't stop these people. The Mayor said he could only fire one person, but the others protected themselves with tricky rules. He said running the city without proper money tracking was like having a bank with no records.

The good news is help might come soon. The Mayor says they will sign papers to start using the new computer system in a few weeks. He wants everyone to see where the city's money goes. He stands alone in this fight but promises to make sure the city uses money the right way.

Mr. Mafume wants to improve Harare. He thinks the new system will help stop people from stealing money, help the city fix roads, provide people with water, and improve the lives of everyone.
