Court orders new probe, inquest in UiTM death

A High Court has mandated a new police investigation and a public inquest into the 2024 death of a Universiti Teknologi Mara student, Amir Rusyaidi Zaidi. Justice Roszianayati Ahmad directed that a new investigating officer from Bukit Aman complete the probe within three months and ordered the attorney general to convene the inquest. The judge stated these steps were necessary to determine if the student's death was caused or accelerated by the acts or negligence of others, citing conflicting accounts in the submitted affidavits.

The court, however, rejected the application from the father, Zaidi Abdul Rahman, to exhume the body for a new post-mortem. Justice Roszianayati noted that the cause of death had been definitively established by Hospital Shah Alam as heat stroke with multi-organ failure. Clinical tests reportedly showed severe dehydration impacting multiple organs, with no significant physical injuries found. The student died after being hospitalized during a university training programme.
