Cox's Bazar showdown as Dr Asif Nazrul drives new NHRC power grab

Bangladesh's government presented the draft National Human Rights Commission Ordinance 2025 during a Cox's Bazar consultation event. The Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division organized the stakeholder meeting with support from UNDP and Switzerland's Embassy. Officials designed the new ordinance to replace the existing 2009 legislation and strengthen the commission's independence. The proposed changes align with the Paris Principles and address recommendations from the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions.

Law Minister Dr. Asif Nazrul emphasized the need for political independence in human rights oversight. UNDP's Stefan Liller reaffirmed support for governance reforms during this pivotal period. Swiss Ambassador Reto Renggli stressed the importance of institutional credibility and efficiency. The consultation follows previous sessions in Sylhet and Khulna, with additional regional meetings planned before a national dialogue in Dhaka. Stakeholder feedback will guide final amendments to the human rights commission legislation.
