Creecy, PRASA want praise for 300 trains in eThekwini

The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa celebrated the delivery of its 300th domestically manufactured train on Tuesday, 28 October 2025, at an event in eThekwini, KwaZulu-Natal. Transport Minister Barbara Creecy attended the ceremony, which featured the X'trapolis Mega trains produced by the Gibela Rail Transport Consortium at its Nigel facility in Ekurhuleni. The milestone represents half of the agency's target of 600 units by approximately 2035.

The Gibela consortium combines French company Alstom with local partner Ubumbano Rail. Workers at the Dunnottar plant have manufactured trains with air conditioning and capacity for 1,200 passengers each. More than 60 percent of components originate from South African suppliers.

Officials launched a one-megawatt solar installation at Durban Station and opened Isipingo Mall adjacent to Isipingo Station. The shopping center spans 7,259 square meters, featuring 45 retail spaces and 304 parking spaces. Construction generated 271 positions and cost 374.2 million rand.
