Thousands attended a memorial ceremony on Wednesday at Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay to honor the former prime minister who died in India on October 15. Oburu Odinga, his brother and acting Orange Democratic Movement head, led the service celebrating a political figure who influenced Kenyan democracy and regional governance across more than 40 years.
Government officials from Nyanza and surrounding areas joined religious leaders and supporters at the venue named after the deceased statesman. Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga described the gathering as an opportunity to reflect on the democratic principles the late leader promoted throughout his career. Attendees pledged to maintain ODM participation in the current government through 2027 and expressed support for Oburu Odinga as party chairman going forward.
Participants at the ecumenical event represented multiple levels of government. Migori Governor Ochilo Ayacko and National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohammed attended alongside several lawmakers from constituencies across the region. County assembly members and clergy also gathered to recognize the enduring influence of a political career that shaped national discourse for decades.
