Cruise ship capsizes in Ha Long Bay, Vietnam, leaving 37 dead and dozens missing

A tourist vessel sank during severe weather conditions in Ha Long Bay, Vietnam, on Saturday afternoon. The storm struck the cruise boat at 1:30 PM, causing communication loss by 2:05 PM and complete submersion. Forty-eight passengers were aboard the vessel when the disaster occurred. Rescue teams recovered 37 bodies while saving 11 survivors from the turbulent waters. The victims and survivors consisted of Vietnamese families who had traveled from Hanoi to visit the UNESCO World Heritage site.

Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh offered sympathy to bereaved families and demanded a complete investigation. Government officials promised strict consequences for any violations that contributed to the maritime accident. Ha Long Bay attracts millions of tourists annually to view its limestone formations and emerald waters. The 2019 visitor count exceeded 4 million people from both domestic and international locations. Search operations continue as authorities work to locate the remaining missing passengers.
