Cumilla University students rage against police after Bangla Blockade

LGRD Adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain marked July 11 as the opening day of resistance during the 2024 mass uprising. Students at Cumilla University faced the first brutal police assault when officers from the fascist regime attacked without warning. The bloodshed sparked fierce student opposition and highway blockades that continued until 11 pm. Protesters shut down the vital Dhaka-Chattogram road connection and ignited nationwide demonstrations. The university incident became the catalyst that fueled countrywide movement against authoritarian rule.

Asif made his declaration during a memorial gathering at Cumilla University commemorating the anniversary of police violence. Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Haidar Ali presided over the ceremony while Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Masuda Kamal attended as special guest. The adviser praised student courage and promised three new buses for campus transportation. Distinguished attendees included Treasurer Professor Dr Mohammad Solaiman and Proctor Professor Dr Abdul Hakim. Local officials Cumilla Deputy Commissioner Amirul Kaisar and Superintendent Najir Ahmed Khan joined the commemoration.

Twenty students suffered injuries when police opened fire and launched tear gas canisters during the Bangla Blockade program. Officers beat demonstrators with batons while firing weapons at peaceful protesters on campus grounds. Word about the attack spread rapidly and triggered massive anger among student populations nationwide. Residential hall students mobilized immediately and marched onto the major highway connecting two major cities. The eight-hour road closure demonstrated powerful resistance against government oppression.
