DA eyes revival of Bethulie Resort with new partnership

The Democratic Alliance proposed a public-private partnership with Kopanong Local Municipality and Xhariep District Municipality to revitalize Bethulie Resort near Gariep Dam. DA councillor Hessie Shebe stated the plan aims to restore the dilapidated site, leveraging its natural beauty and historical assets like the 1,100-meter Hennie Steyn Bridge and Anglo-Boer War memorials to boost tourism and create jobs.

Shebe noted that past investor interest failed to materialize, urging concrete action now. The partnership model would attract private funding for upgrades, including chalet renovations, walking trails, and safety improvements. Reviving the resort could generate short-term construction work and long-term employment in hospitality and tourism, benefiting Bethulie's struggling economy.

The site's potential includes eco-tourism opportunities near Oviston Nature Reserve and connections to nearby attractions like Philippolis. Despite being featured in municipal development plans, chronic underfunding stalled previous revival attempts. The DA emphasized sustainable management and community involvement to ensure lasting success, positioning Bethulie as a template for Free State tourism recovery.
