Dalai Lama hails Sushila Karki as Nepal's first woman interim prime minister

The Dalai Lama extended official congratulations to Sushila Karki after her appointment as Nepal's interim Prime Minister on Saturday. Karki took her oath of office Friday night, marking a historic moment as the first female leader of the Himalayan nation at age 73. Her appointment followed the collapse of K P Sharma Oli's administration amid widespread Gen-Z demonstrations earlier this week. Protesters specifically endorsed Karki's candidacy over alternative non-political figures proposed during the selection process.

The Tibetan spiritual leader praised the longstanding bonds between Nepal and Tibet through an official statement from his office. He expressed appreciation for Nepal's assistance to Tibetan refugees who fled their homeland after 1959. The Dalai Lama highlighted the economic contributions made by the Tibetan community despite their small numbers. He acknowledged Nepal's progress across multiple sectors while emphasizing the importance of helping disadvantaged populations. Border crossings reopened Thursday for Indian pilgrims traveling to Kailash Mansarovar through Nepal.
