Zimbabwe has enough water stored in dams to grow winter wheat this season. The Lands Ministry checked 151 major dams across the country. They found sufficient reserves to irrigate 120,000 hectares, which can produce 600,000 tonnes of wheat. This amount would beat last year's record harvest of 563,961 tonnes. Most areas received good rainfall from December through early March.
Southern regions saw excellent precipitation levels. Professor Obert Jiri said the Masvingo and Matabeleland dams are full. Almost every province has more water than last year except Masho Standing Central. These reserves can support wheat farming alongside 6,500 hectares of barley and 8,750 hectares of potatoes without draining water resources.
Farmers will receive funding through various programs, including private contracts and the National Enhanced Agricultural Productivity Scheme. The electric company plans to set aside 150 megawatts of power for wheat growers, up from 120 megawatts previously. Officials created 22 equipment centers where farmers can access affordable machinery. Each combine harvester can process about 10 hectares daily.
