Daring Cable Heist Foiled on Harare-Nyamapanda Road

Mutoko Police Arrest Four in Connection with ZESA Holdings Theft.

Mutoko police apprehended four individuals on suspicion of stealing copper from ZESA Holdings transformers and armored cables. The arrests took place on January 27, 2025, following a tip received by law enforcement.

National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi identified the suspects as Anderson Takawira, alias Tatenda Vambe, 30; Isaac Vheremu, 38; Trymore Bona, 30; and Archford Chiyangwa, 25. They were taken into custody at a roadblock along the Harare-Nyamapanda Road.

The arrest led to the seizure of the suspects' getaway vehicle, a Toyota Aqua with registration number AGF 9536. Police also recovered bolts, nuts, two scales, spanners, a knife, and armored cables from the car.

Authorities have linked the suspects to two incidents that occurred on the same day. In one case, transformer oil was stolen from a ZETDC property at Mushimbo Business Centre. The other involved the theft of ZETDC copper cables at Rukau Business Centre in Mutoko, where a transformer was vandalized before the cables were taken.

This latest arrest follows last week's apprehension of six individuals involved in the theft of copper cables targeting Zesa Holdings equipment in Bulawayo, Kwekwe, and Zvishavane. The police continue their efforts to crack down on copper theft and vandalism of electrical infrastructure.
