DCAB slams attacks on press, demands justice

A Bangladeshi press group is sounding the alarm over recent attacks on media outlets and journalists. The Diplomatic Correspondents Association strongly condemned violent acts at the offices of Prothom Alo and The Daily Star newspapers. They also denounced the harassment of veteran editor Nurul Kabir.

The association stated that independent journalism is a key pillar of democracy. They called violence and intimidation aimed at silencing the press completely unacceptable, arguing that such acts violate media freedom and constitutional rights. They emphasized that the targeting of Kabir is especially worrying, posing a threat to both professional dignity and personal safety.

The group demanded a fast and impartial investigation to identify and prosecute those responsible. They also called on government authorities to take visible steps to ensure the security of all media workers. The statement expressed solidarity with other press organizations and concern over the arrest of the association's own former president. It further noted the group's alignment with a national day of mourning for a recently deceased activist. The statement was issued jointly by the association's president and general secretary.
