DCI Tracks Mugger Gang After Robbery in Kampala

Police arrested a suspect linked to a robbery targeting a Scottish visitor in Kampala last weekend. The crime intelligence team worked with Katwe police to catch the suspect after security cameras showed him stealing a phone worth about $1,900. During questioning, the man called Kirengwe admitted to taking the phone but claimed he acted as part of a larger gang. He named seven accomplices, including a leader called Ali, who operated across several neighborhoods.

Officers searched for other gang members in Bulenga, where locals confirmed these criminals regularly attacked people after dark. One resident named Stella said they make life difficult, mentioning a recent assault on a young woman who was severely injured. Although the other suspects had escaped, a motorcycle taxi driver told police he was robbed by the same group a day earlier, losing about $108 when five men threatened him with violence.

The investigation continued to Salama, where police broke into a locked room belonging to two gang members. They found weapons, including machetes, inside. Some residents questioned why police respond faster when foreigners become victims compared to when Ugandans report similar crimes involving phones, cash, or computers.
