Kampala police gun down robbery suspect after a spate of heists

Kampala's streets got loud last night as cops traded fire with robbery suspects. Police in the Kiwatule area responded to a string of violent muggings targeting residents in Nakawa Division. The situation escalated into a shootout during their pursuit operation.

Three separate robberies went down that same night in nearby neighborhoods. Victims included a teacher and a businesswoman. They lost phones, laptops, cash, and IDs. The total haul was worth millions in local currency.

This isn't some isolated event. Robbery stats nationwide have been creeping upward. Last year's official police report showed over eight thousand cases. That marked a noticeable jump from the previous year.

After the crimes, officers followed tips toward the Northern Bypass. That's where things got heated. Cops say a suspect tried to attack them with a machete. They fired back.

The suspect, identified as Joseph Wataba, was shot. He was arrested and taken to the hospital for treatment. Police recovered a motorcycle, a machete, and one of the stolen tablets at the scene.

His accomplices managed to run away. Investigations are ongoing to find them and the rest of the loot. Authorities told people in the area to stay alert as they increase patrols.
