Museveni accuses NUP of ballot fraud in Kampala

President Museveni claims opposition groups, particularly the NUP, have conducted major election fraud in Kampala for years. He alleged during a recent speech that they engaged in ballot stuffing and printed counterfeit ballots on Kuruma Road during the 2021 polls. Museveni stated they produced millions of fake papers locally and imported others, cheating the system of over two million votes, though he provided no evidence.

The opposition National Unity Platform, led by Bobi Wine, denies these accusations. They argue that state security forces and the electoral commission manipulate outcomes to favor the ruling NRM instead, citing intimidation and falsified results. Museveni linked disputed elections to long-term national instability, referencing concerns he has voiced for decades.

His comments follow an earlier directive for criminal probes into a specific by-election in Kawempe North. That investigation focuses on reported ballot box destruction, voter intimidation, and illegal campaigning at polling stations. Museveni vowed to hold perpetrators accountable, warning that such crimes would not be tolerated under the current government.
