President Museveni inaugurated the Busega Central Market facility during his assessment tour of Parish Development Model programs across Kampala. The complex houses more than 2,800 vendors who relocated from street operations to the organized commercial space. First Lady Janet Museveni accompanied the president as he examined vendor operations within the modern structure. Government officials constructed the marketplace through the Markets and Agricultural Trade Improvement Programme with financing from the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa. Vendors began occupying the facility in November 2024 after completion of the infrastructure project.
Museveni emphasized how the covered marketplace protects merchandise from weather damage while providing secure trading conditions. The president recalled previous conditions when vendors conducted business outdoors without shelter from rain and environmental hazards. Market leadership proposed constructing a direct access road connecting the Northern Bypass to the commercial center. Museveni endorsed the transportation improvement plan and promised coordination with Kampala Capital City Authority leadership. The president criticized local opposition representatives for failing to advocate effectively for constituency infrastructure needs.
Three cooperative organizations received 100 million shillings each in government capitalization during the commissioning ceremony. Busega United Fish Dealers and Processors, Busega Market, and Tuli Bumu Drivers cooperatives benefited from the financial injection. Religious leaders operating within the division will receive an additional 50 million shillings through a specialized cooperative structure. KCCA Executive Director Sharifah Buzeki reported that 300 market stalls remain unoccupied despite vendor registration efforts.
