Deadbeat dad jailed, wife-beater slapped with a fine

A local man got jail time for dodging child support payments. Takaedza Togarepi, age thirty-four, from Mahatshula North in Bulawayo, received a six-month sentence after pleading guilty to failing to pay court-ordered maintenance. Western Commonage magistrate Jeconia Prince Ncube convicted him. The order from last July required Togarepi to pay seventy dollars monthly for his child's upkeep. He defaulted starting in late July, accruing two hundred ten dollars in arrears by November. His former wife, Thendani Ndlovu, filed the police report leading to his arrest.

The magistrate suspended three months of the jail term for three years on condition of good behavior. The remaining three months were also suspended, but only if Togarepi pays one hundred twenty dollars of the arrears by January sixteenth. In a separate case, a forty-eight-year-old man from Emthunzini suburb was fined for assault. Never Moyo was convicted for slapping his wife, Miriam Ncube, during a domestic dispute on December 17th. Magistrate Ncube gave him a one-hundred-twenty-dollar fine, due by January sixteenth, with a thirty-day jail alternative for non-payment. Prosecuting for both cases, Cathrine Kuzu presented the facts leading to the arrests.
