Death toll rises to six in Baghlan coal mine explosion, 18 injured in Afghanistan

Afghan authorities confirmed that fatalities from a Baghlan province coal mine blast reached six people. The Karkar mine explosion injured eighteen additional workers who received treatment at local medical facilities. Taliban officials reported the incident occurred Monday afternoon, though investigators have not established the cause of the blast. Mine supervisor Mawlawi Abdullah oversaw rescue operations at the site.

Afghanistan experiences frequent mining accidents due to inadequate safety protocols and poor regulatory oversight. Workers face constant danger from methane gas buildups and structural failures at extraction sites. February witnessed three deaths from gas explosions at a Samangan province coal mine in Dara-e-Souf Bala district. Two additional miners perished in separate Dara-e-Souf incidents during the same month. The mining sector continues operating without proper infrastructure despite Afghanistan's abundant natural resources.
