Derrick Groves, the last remaining New Orleans inmate on the run, has been captured in Georgia. Authorities confirmed his arrest after a standoff with U.S. Marshals at a home in Southwest Atlanta. The capture occurred near Campbellton Road and Honeysuckle Lane, ending a months-long manhunt that began following a large-scale escape from the Orleans Parish jail in May.
Groves was one of ten inmates who escaped on May 16. The others—Kendell Myles, Robert Moody, Gary Price, D’Kenan Dennis, Corey Boyd, Lenton Vanburen Jr., Jermaine Donald, Leo Tate, and Antoine Massey—have since been recaptured. Prior to the escape, Groves was convicted on three counts of attempted second-degree murder. He is also the grandson of Kim Groves, whose 1994 murder in New Orleans became a notorious police corruption case.
Investigators also revealed that Groves’ girlfriend, Darriana Burton, assisted in the escape. Burton, now in custody, faces conspiracy charges for allegedly using the jail’s iPad communication system to help coordinate Groves’ breakout. Burton, a former employee of the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office, had been terminated in 2023 for bringing contraband into the jail. The incident has raised concerns about jail security and inmate access to communication.
