Dewan Rakyat mulls mandate for MyDigital ID, says Dr Zaliha Mustafa

Malaysian authorities consider legislation requiring citizens to register for MyDigital ID verification systems. Minister Zaliha Mustafa told Parliament that voluntary enrollment creates barriers to widespread usage. Officials explore mandatory registration options to boost participation rates across the population. Current voluntary policies limit government efforts to expand digital identity adoption. Legislative changes may compel or encourage more Malaysians to join the program.

Registration numbers climbed from 1.8 million users during the first quarter to 2.8 million by the second quarter this year. Government applications totaling 35 systems currently support MyDigital ID integration. Another 17 applications undergo development while 21 remain under consideration by agencies. Seven private sector systems operate with the digital identity platform. Two additional non-government integrations advance through implementation phases.

Bank Negara Malaysia supervised six financial institutions that completed sandbox testing procedures. The digital identity service began operations last November with government portal connections. MyDigital ID works alongside existing MyKad identification cards rather than replacing physical documents.
