Dhaka police arrest Jane Alam, ex-student leader, in Shammi Ahmed extortion case

Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested Jane Alam on Friday for alleged extortion activities. The Detective Branch apprehended Alam, also called Apu, from Wari area after accusations emerged about money collection from former parliamentarian Shammi Ahmed's residence. Police Commissioner Muhammad Talebur Rahman verified the arrest and revealed Alam's connection to earlier extortion attempts in Gulshan. Alam had falsely presented himself as a coordinator within the anti-discrimination student movement. Both men previously held positions as joint conveners of the Bangladesh Democratic Students Union.

Previous reports revealed that Abdur Razzak bin Solaiman and associates had visited Ahmed's Gulshan home last month. The group threatened Sidduique Abu Zafar, Ahmed's spouse, while demanding fifty lakh taka as ransom payment. Authorities arrested five individuals on Saturday evening during another collection attempt at the residence. The arrested persons were Ibrahim Hossain, Sakadaun Siam, Sadman Sadab, Razzak, and one minor whose name remains undisclosed. The youth was transferred to Tongi Youth Development Centre while others face seven-day police remand following Zafar's formal complaint.
