Digital Foundry explains why your new Switch 2 is gimped

Digital Foundry experts dropped some major news about the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 gaming console. The tech gurus answered fan questions during their weekly podcast about why the new system lacks certain display features. They explained that the authentication chip inside the dock has nothing to do with missing VRR support. The authentication process happens before any video output even starts working. This means Nintendo faces different technical challenges that prevent smooth variable refresh rate functionality.

The real problem comes from converting Display Port signals to HDMI through the USB-C connection. This same issue causes headaches for Steam Deck users who want VRR features. Digital Foundry believes the technology could work on Switch 2 hardware but would create major compatibility problems. Nintendo wants every game to work perfectly right out of the box without any setup hassles.

Launch games for Switch 2 mostly skip 40 frames per second modes despite having a 120Hz screen. Digital Foundry says most current titles would not benefit much from this frame rate option anyway. Cyberpunk 2077 already supports 40 FPS gaming which proves the console can handle it. More developers might add this feature to future games if VRR problems get fixed. Games need to stay locked at exactly 40 FPS without variable refresh rates to provide good player experiences.
